"Volunteering creates a sense of belonging and can relieve depression and chronic pain and reduce risk for heart attack and stroke." -- Sarah M. Speck, MD, medical director, Center for Cardiovascular Wellness, Swedish Medical Center, Seattle.
Sidal, Inc., franchisee of Papa John's Pizza, contributed $1,294 to Junior Achievement of Central Illinois (JA) via its online pizza coupon promotion - after just 90 days of offering the coupons. Papa John's locations in Peoria, East Peoria, Bloomington/Normal, Pekin, Lincoln, Galesburg, and Canton are all participating in this new partnership. "$1,294 in just 90 days is impressive, and it says 3 things quite clearly," said JA President Larry Timm. "People like Papa John's Pizza. They prefer ordering delicious pizza online. And the ever-increasing Junior Achievement constituent base has purchasing power." Anyone can order one of two specials from www.JuniorAchievement.biz and two dollars of each order will benefit JA.
Yesterday morning, Jack Kosakowski (President of Junior Achievement USA) appeared live on C-SPAN's "Washington Journal." His appearance coincided with the Financial Literacy "Day on the Hill" event held yesterday on Capitol Hill. During the segment, Jack discussed the importance of financial literacy for all Americans and youth in particular, fielded calls from viewers, and promoted Junior Achievement's leadership in the area of financial education. As a third grade teacher and the social studies curriculum chair for Unit 5's third through 5th grades, I would like to thank you so much for the JA opportunity! My class has really enjoyed this project and they look forward so much for Thursday to come! We have seen so much growth during this time and the questions show an in-depth understanding of the subject after Jennifer has engaged them so beautifully! I am also thrilled that it has met our state goals so completely. We are all going to be sad when this experience is over but look forward to incorporating the program again next year! As curricular chair, I would appreciate the opportunity to include your program in all of our schools. I feel with encouragement, many would love this chance! Thanks again! Jodi Kinzinger, Northpoint 3rd Grade, Unit 5 Social Studies Curriculum Chair
They called themselves "Caramel Inc.," but they are better known as Luke Durand, Nick Morgan, and Mary Batenhorst. The Dunlap High School students used their savvy, teamwork and business acumen to each take home a $1,000 college scholarship at Junior Achievement's Titan Business Competition, held April 18 at Robert Morris College. East Peoria High School's "Team Green" consisting of Houston Mach, James Bremer and Scotty Edmondson each won a $500 scholarship for their efforts. Over $1,000 in additional prizes were awarded to teams for various accomplishments, including a radio ad promo contest. Teams of students competed against each other to market and manufacture a fictional Holo-generator. Participating students earned the right to compete by finishing well in their local Junior Achievement classroom competition earlier in the school year. JA Titan is an opportunity to challenge high school students to learn about financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and workforce readiness. Titan is geared to be an interactive, challenging and fun internet-based simulation where high school students practice their critical thinking and team building skills.
JA is going to reach 13,000 students this year. That costs money. But we're only $6,818 away from making our financial goal. These folks have helped. Will you, please?
